Frances Hodgson grew up in increasingly straitened circumstances after the death of her father in 1854. Frances Hodgson Burnett first published a novella called Sara Crewe: Or, What Happened at Miss Minchin's in 1887 and 1888. Later adapted into a stage play, the story reached its final form as A Little Princess in 1905. But it's not about an actual princess. In fact, it tells the story of a young girl on a fast, downward slope.
Captain Crewe, a wealthy English widower, has been raising his only child, Sara, in India where he is stationed with the British Army. A classic by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
